Spatial divisions of poverty and wealth: does segregation affect educational achievement?

Abstract We examine how different spatial compositions affect the educational achievement in mathematics of 16-year-old students Chile, a Latin American country with high inequality and one most segregated education systems world. Conceptually, we complement literature on ‘neighbourhood effects’, which typically addresses influence concentrated disadvantage, by focusing advantage its outcomes. construct panel all school who took national standardized test 2010, 2014 2016 Metropolitan Region Santiago, Chile. it survey data for 52 districts Region, clustering based factors such as unemployment, economic inequality, access to services, experiences violence stigmatization. Our identification strategies consistently show that poverty affluence are both relevant explaining above beyond individual characteristics.
